Jean Monnet Chair «Strengthening EU Leadership and Capacity in Science and Innovation» (101175767—EU_STRENGHTS—ERASMUS-JMO-2024-HEI-TCH-RSCH) 2024-2027
Since September 2024, Sumy State University has been implementing a project funded by the European Commission — the Jean Monnet Chair “Strengthening EU Leadership and Capacity in Science and Innovation” (EU_STRENGHTS), led by PhD, Associate Professor Inna Koblyanska.
The main objective of this Jean Monnet Chair is to promote EU innovation culture and scientific values among students, scholars, businesses, government, and the public and support its adoption.
Specific objectives of the project include:
- Reinforce the contribution of lifelong learning to social cohesion, intercultural dialogue, and personal fulfilment through the development of EU study courses for students, SMEs, and scholars;
- Enhance knowledge and awareness about EU science and innovation culture;
- Encourage tolerance and respect for other people and cultures through teaching intercultural groups of students;
- Foster collaboration of academia, business, policymakers, and civil society to create a network of motivated persons supporting and promoting common EU cooperation principles;
- Support the integration of EU-related studies in higher education institutions within and outside the EU.
Target audiences of the project include university and college students, secondary school pupils, researchers and scholars, representatives of academia, business, civil society, public authorities, and the general public across Ukraine.
Expected outcomes of the project:
- Development of project communication resources, including social media;
- Design and delivery of educational courses;
- Publication of textbooks, a monograph, and academic papers;
- Organisation of round tables, conferences, and other academic events;
- Participation in and organisation of outreach activities to promote the project and the EU’s role in science, research, and innovation.
This Jean Monnet Chair EU_STRENGHTS contributes to strengthening the EU leadership and capacity in science and innovation by:
- Equipping Ukrainian and foreign students, business actors, and educators with knowledge and competencies on EU innovation;
- Strengthening the capacity of Ukrainian scholars to produce high-quality and impactful research, facilitating innovation in academia and beyond;
- Strengthening the relations between the Ukrainian and the EU research communities.

Oleksandr Kubatko – Doctor of Economics, Professor, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Administration, Sumy State University. Expert of the regional GCIP Accelerator for innovations, technologies and start-ups in Sumy Region (UNIDO/GEF Project).
Leonid Melnyk – Doctor of Economics, Professor at the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Administration, Sumy State University. Director of the Research Institute for Development Economics under the Ministry of Education and Science and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (at SSU). Academician of the International Academy of Informatisation; member of the International Society for Ecological Economics.
Yuliia Chortok – PhD in Economics, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Administration, and Head of the Academic Department, Sumy State University. Member of the NGO “Centre for Civic Education and Business Initiatives”.
Vitaliy Omelianenko – Doctor of Economics, Professor at the Department of Business Economics and Administration, Head of the Research Sector at Sumy State Pedagogical University named after A.S. Makarenko. Postdoctoral researcher at the Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences. Certified Technology Manager and member of the International Project Management Association (IPMA).

Certificate Course: “EU Practices of Excellent Research in a Digital Era”. In Ukrainian.
This training course is designed for researchers and scholars from Ukraine. Its main goal is to introduce participants to modern European practices of conducting data-driven research. The course aims to provide essential knowledge and develop practical skills to improve the quality of academic research, foster scientific collaboration, and strengthen the societal impact of science and research in line with the EU’s digital transformation agenda. Target audience: academic staff and researchers from higher education institutions and research organisations, at various stages of their professional careers.
Certificate Course: “Innovative Entrepreneurship and Start-ups in the EU (Experience for Ukraine)”. In Ukrainian.
This training course is tailored for entrepreneurs and representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ukraine. Its main objective is to familiarise participants with the characteristics of the EU market, the functioning of the EU start-up ecosystem, and the principles of start-up development and management. The course provides essential knowledge and develops practical skills for launching and growing start-ups and businesses, with a focus on expanding into the EU market. Target audience: entrepreneurs, SME representatives, civil society organisations involved in entrepreneurship and business support, experts, and the wider public.
