History of the Сonference “Economics for Ecology”

The international conference “Economics for Ecology” started in 1992 for the first time.

Let’s walk on pages of history. In the early 90th, Ukraine experienced an economic crisis stage of its becoming and development as a new independent state. That was shown in a high inflation rate, general poverty, constant nonpayment of wages, and grants. There was an impression that we appeared in the boondocks of history. The developing situation demanded general consolidation of efforts and acceptance of drastic measures by all social institutions.

Also, higher educational institutions have played an important role in searching for ways to solve problems. One of the brightest representatives is Sumy State University (SumDU) – a university of classical type, 4th level of accreditation.

Kind of SumDU contribution to the decision of problems of economic and ecological interdependence that have already become actual was the creation of the conference “Economy for Ecology”. The conference’s founder is Professor Leonid Melnyk, a doctor of economic sciences.

At the initial stages of the conference, separate foreign experts were involved in participation, with whom there was established cooperation. Representatives of the United Nations organisation on preserving the environment and volunteers have been involved in conferences in separate years. Initially, there was a tendency for reports, scientific development, and various projects to a greater degree be represented by already existing scientific figures and experts from Belgium, Ukraine, and the Peace Corps. Further, the number of participants among students and young scientists has increased.

Since 1998, a student has decided to change the conference format. Its theoretical part (discussion of substantive provisions, carrying out of “round” tables (debate)) was conducted at the university, and the practical part (carrying out of intellectual group games) was performed in camps, including entertainment with elements of participants’ national cultures.

During the conference’s existence, there were representatives of various regions of Ukraine and multiple countries among participants of ISCS (ICYS):
Lithuania, Turkey, Italy, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Serbia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Nigeria, Poland, Estonia, Ghana, Hungary, Congo Democratic Republic, Georgia, Burundi, Bangladesh, Belarus, Kenya, Germany, Uganda, the USA, Canada, Romania, Moldova, etc.

«Economy for Ecology» contributed to the occurrence of young perspective experts who presented their scientific works based on conference materials, like the ex-chairman of the conference, Oleksandr Romanko, who works in Canada now. Natives of the conference – post-graduate students and teachers of high schools – have brought up a new talented generation of followers who can pass on the baton in the struggle for the best future. The motto of our conference: «Leave something to future generations!»
