Jean Monnet

Jean Monnet program is one of the educational programs of the European Union aimed at raising the level of knowledge and awareness of students, students and society as a whole on economic, historical, cultural and legal issues of European integration. Jean Monet is a French economist, a politician who, for his efforts in a united Europe, received the nickname “Father of the united Europe”. Jean Monet created and headed the “The Action Committee for the United States of Europe”, which operated from 1955 to 1975. It is important to know that Jean Monnet is one of the ideologues of the united Europe, and he told: “Europe has never existed,  Europe need to be created”.

Jean Monnet direct objective within Erasmus+ is to intensify European integration, to foster excellence in European integration studies, to attract higher education institutions to study European integration processes and to spread the ideas of the United Europe.

Within the educational framework of Jean Monnet programme, the European Union allocates funds to higher education institutions, non-governmental organizations and associations to launch teaching of European integration disciplines, the development of scientific activities, the organization of different events (summer schools, seminars, conferences, etc.).

Ukrainian universities have participated in Jean Monnet program since 2001. Teaching and research activity, which includes such forms of Jean Monnet program implementation as “Chairs”, “Modules” and “Centers of Excellence” are the most popular in Ukraine among higher education institutions. In particular, Jean Monet Modules are aimed at developing and teaching courses devoted to the EU and European integration. Jean Monet Chairs are intended for researchers of European studies to develop new and upgrade existing courses on European integration as well as to deliver lectures. The scholars and faculty members who receive Jean Monnet Chair grant for their universities become Jean Monet Professors. Centers of Excellence are intended to establish and support the activity of resource (educational) centers on universities basis with the involvement of analytical centres, associations, networks in order to encourage them to conduct interdisciplinary research on European integration.
