During the Fall semester 2024/2025 Oleksandr Kubatko (Doctor in Economics, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Administration) provided an author’s course “Methods of preparing academic papers” for the PhD students of Sumy State University as a part of Teaching course No6 “EU practices of excellent research in a digital era” within Jean Monnet Chair project “Strengthening EU Leadership and Capabilities in Science and Innovation” (101175767—EU_STRENGHTS—ERASMUS-JMO-2024-HEI-TCH-RSCH) 2024-2027.
Acquisition of knowledge and competencies in the field of writing scientific papers and skills for their effective use is a goal of the course. This training course for Ukrainian PhD students aimed to familiarize them with the EU modern data-driven research practices. The course equips participants with practical knowledge and skills to enhance the quality, collaboration, and impact of their research endeavors in line with the EU digital transformation agenda. The subject of the discipline is the theory and methodology of preparation of text documents with a complex structure. The course helps PhD students to acquire the competencies necessary for the design of academic texts and the composition of their semantic elements. The course provides both lectures and practical classes. Totally 30 hours of lectures and 50 hours of seminars are delivered in groups of students (totally 44 PhD students). The lecturing and seminars on data visualization and bibliography preparation were delivered by Inna Koblianska, PhD in Economics, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Administration.
The course covers academic and EU topics, including: Analysis of the reasons for low basic academic literacy in Ukraine compared to EU. The modern concept of academic literacy. Differences from journalistic and artistic styles. The concept of “personal process – practice – public product” in the creation of academic texts. Integrity, models, and principles of academic writing. Evaluation criteria. Research ideation and draft preparation: EU practices. Research data collection and management: EU practices. EU data ethics and privacy. Basics of data analysis . Data analysis: basic concepts. EU-originated tools for data analysis. Data analysis methods. Basics of programming. Data visualization. Digital content creation. Research funding opportunities in the EU. Academic writing and publishing: EU research excellence, and others.
The PhD students of Sumy State University after the finishing the course get more prepared and more competitive in academic sphere.
