On May 31, 2024, Doctor of Economics, Professor Leonid Melnyk participated in the dissertation defense of Regina Veckalne titled “Evaluation of urban sustainability of Uzbekistan in the context of regional development” at the Faculty of Engineering Economics of Riga Technical University as an official opponent.
Regina Veckalne’s dissertation for obtaining a PhD in Social Sciences was supervised by Tatjana Tambovceva, a Doctor of Economics and professor at Riga Technical University. The research aims to deepen the understanding of sustainable urban development in the Central Asian region, particularly in Uzbekistan.
In her work, the researcher developed a new methodological approach to assessing urban sustainability, considering regional specificities, public awareness, and the role of gender equality. This study proposes innovative approaches to understanding urban sustainability and presents a unique set of urban sustainable development indicators for Uzbekistan. The research results highlight the crucial role of public awareness about sustainable development and the importance of gender equality in achieving sustainable urban development goals.
Professor Leonid Melnyk’s participation as an official opponent in Regina Veckalne’s dissertation defence marks another step in the long-standing and successful cooperation between the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship, and Business Administration and Riga Technical University. This collaboration opens new opportunities for exchanging experiences and conducting joint scientific research to address current sustainable development issues.
