Scientific and educational bridge between the USA and Ukraine: SumDU teachers and students take part in discussion of security issues

The security of socio-economic systems is hugely relevant in the phase transition to a new socio-economic formation. This transition is currently being experienced by humanity in the course of three industrial revolutions: Industries 3.0, 4.0, 5.0. Security problems have become extremely acute in Ukraine The problems have become extremely acute in Ukraine under Russian aggression.

The urgency of these problems is explained by the attention attracted by the Ukrainian-American scientific and educational bridge, which took place on May 6, 2022. The event was attended by about 100 teachers and students from three universities: Sumy State University (SumDU) (Ukraine), Polissya National University (PNU) (Ukraine) and the University of Maryland (UMD) (USA).

The report-lecture was made by Dr. Leonid Melnyk and Doctor of Economics Oleksandr Kubatko, Professors of the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Administration (EPBA) of SSU, Heads of EU Departments Jean Monnet. They acquainted with the phenomenon of security and showed how the achievements of modern industrial revolutions during the war affect the security of socio-economic systems.

In particular, the achieved level of “green” energy (45 thousand private solar power plants) and “green” transport (over 40 thousand electric cars) has allowed Ukraine to significantly mitigate the effects of the destruction of the fuel sector. According to the pace of greening of these sectors of the economy, Ukraine is among the top 10 countries in the world and the top 5 countries in Europe.

The ability of the Ukrainian people to self-organize plays a significant role in preserving the functional state of the national economy. The share of freelancers among working people in Ukraine is approaching 10%. That is, every tenth working Ukrainian finds a job for himself, determines the mode of work and rest, and carries out financial activities. It was the ability to work remotely that greatly facilitated the condition of many families during the war. According to the number of freelancers per capita, Ukraine is in the TOP-5 countries in the world.

An important role in ensuring the economic security of the country is played by the IT sector, which during the war came in second place in the country’s exports (after the agro-industrial sector). It is much less sensitive in comparison with the metallurgical complex to the violation of resource logistics.

The lecture provoked a lively discussion of the participants. The moderators of the round table were: Doctor of Economics, Prof. Iryna Sotnyk (SumDU), Doctor of Economics, Professor Vitaliy Dankevych (PNU) and Dr., prof. Ann J. Leger (UMD).

The lecture used the results of scientific research of two EU projects of Jean Monnet (department level), which are currently being implemented at the Department of EPBA SumDU:

  • “Legislative, economic and social transition of the EU to a sustainable society within Industry 4.0 and 5.0” (619997-EPP-1-2020-1-UA-EPPJMO-CHAIR) (2020–2023), headed by L. Melnyk;
  • “EU Economic Policy and Civil Society” (619878-EPP-1-2020-1-UA-EPPJMO-CHAIR) (2020–2023), headed by O. Kubatko.
